Back to the Craft Store

All I need to do is write two essays, turn them in tomorrow with my portfolio and then I'm out! My plans for this break are simple: PREP FOR MOMOCON! Mostly this means finally sewing that darn shark hoodie! This time, I intend to try to show a step by step photo of putting it together, but I make no promises, as I get really into working and completely forget about photos. I've also got to make some arm spats for our Ples, which will be lots of fun, as he's in Indiana and I don't have his arms for fitting, just measurements. JOY. Just a heads up on what's coming soon. Stay tuned!

So, I ordered my the hoodie to convert into my Veser costume about a week or so ago. Two days ago, it finally shipped. Yesterday, I got home and POOF! There it was! I was rather surprised, considering it was sent USPS. And with my history with USPS, I expected it to arrive in two months, and not two days. SO SURPRISED!

On to the important info!

I think the color is PERFECT. It's a Gildan hoodie, and it's their shade called "indigo" which is no where near what I think of when I hear indigo, but whatever. It's a nice, medium greyish blue. The only downside? Zipper not included. Gnarr! I'm already planning to get to work on it, though. I went out today and bought the zipper, thread, and some fabric paint for the gills on the side. I decided this time around, instead of using the Tulip brand paint, I'd see how the inks for screen printers decide to treat me. I have no idea how well the paint's going to work being applied with a sponge brush...but we'll see!

I'm still working on a way to get my Dental Distortions teeth to cooperate with my mouth. I think it's my mouth that's stupid and not the teeth, though. SIGH. I SHALL CONQUER THEM, THOUGH!!

The hoodie's in the wash now, and I may get to work on painting it while I have the time this weekend. I've gotta get Chekov's The Cherry Orchard read by Tuesday, and I've got a recording from Librivox with my name on it! Multitasking, ahoy!

FINALLY got some photos of my Adelaide and "We All Float On OK" Hoodie! :D

Ta da!! The Adelaide hoodie's on the left, and "Float On" is on the right there.

All I did to make them was buy a black XL hoodie from the mens department in Walmart, and an XL lime green hoodie from Amazon. For the Adelaide hoodie, I used a dress I already had to determine where to bring in the sides. For the "Float On" one, I just took a few inches from each side. Then I merely switched the sleeves , adapting them to fit into the new arm holes. Used some scraps to sew on to the pocket openings of the Adelaide hoodie, and the string from the green hoodie went into its hood. "Float On" hoodie got a red orange shoelace ordered from Amazon. Wee!!

Sorry there aren't any in progress photos. I told you guys, I'm bad at this blogging thing. I get all into my project and forget to bring along a camera for photos. So, I apologize again.

I'll be posting images of my Emily blouse eventually. I want some more shots of it before I post.

Soo. Spent a large part of my day yesterday sewing up the Emily blouse, finding out how much of a bitch collars are, etc, only to find out that it's too small! WHO'DA THUNK?! I apparently just need to shut up, and do what the pattern tells me to do. So, I'll have to get more fabric and start over. Woooo...


In other news, I've got another project to add to the list, a seeecret Christmas present project.

So we've got now:

~Emily blouse (general wear and for Femme!Conrad costume for Halloween {If I get it done by then.})
~Doc Worth jacket (future cosplay and, let's face it, it's awesome)
~Secret Xmas project
~Veser hoodie (for Dragon*Con next year, but that likely won't get tacked until the summer)

Still have to get pictures of the Adelaide and "Float On" hoodies.

Finished the Leg of Mutton top. I'm lazy and will post what I said on my DA:

The shirt was pretty simple to put together, and I actually had a lot of fun with the gathering and stuff. Over all, I'd recommend giving this one a try, but there's only one size to the pattern, and it's a little too small for me. If I'd realized it, I'd have made narrow part of the sleeves a little bit larger so they're not so skin tight like these are. I'd also make the shirt longer, because it is pretty short.

And yes, that's a necklace I made from my HINABN pins, because I wanted to wear them around, but was too paranoid I'd loose them all the time. Only ones missing are the AX ones (which are secured on my bookbag), Lee, and the shirt and tie pin, which is misplaced, at the moment. I know it's not lost lost but...stupid thing disappeared!

Up next is going to be the Emily top. Hopefully will be able to start work on it this week. Sorry there weren't more step by step photos for this one. I always forget to grab my camera when I go downstairs to get to work, and then I get really focused and don't even think about pausing for photos.

My grandmother just gave us her sewing machine (only 3 years old! :D), so now my sister and I are going to put one of them upstairs odds are, it'll help me remember to take more pics. Wee!

Also: finished both the Adelaide hoodie as well as the "Float On" hoodie, but I've yet to get photos taken. Sorry! I'll try to get some this week. :D

Some newly developed projects of mine are more immediate matters (and can only get done when I get my room straightened up...it's HORRIBLE in here!), because they're not cosplay related...well, one of them is. XD

First up will be me creating this awesome top from Burda Style; there's a large grey and black houndstooth that I've got in store for it. :D

Another top planned from Burda Style, because I'm tired of not having a red blouse and not being able to find any that I like in the store. Have yet to decide if I want to do the long, turned over cuffs or not. Any opinions?












And lastly on my list for some fall/winter styles is a coat that I can actually use for a cosplay, but may just wear it because it's AWESOME! I speak, of course, of Doc Worth's jacket from the February reward comic! A friend of mine's got a pattern I'm going to use as a base, but there's going to be a lot of modifications. They scare me, but I think I can manage! We chose a darkish khaki canvas for the coat, and I've got lots and lots of left fur still for the collar. Doc needs more fur clothes so I can get rid of this stuff. XD

YEAH. I've already done it!

A brief overview:



First step was marking where I was going to sew. I used another dress I had to get the approximate size I needed.

Then I sewed it up and tried it on...and it was WAY TOO SMALL. The outline worked well for the other dress, as it was a stretchy knit, but not at all for the T-shirt. Ripped out the stitching and moved both sides out about half an inch or more. Tried it on again and it was perfect.


TRIM IT DOOWN! This included the sides left over, and sleeves. It was an XL shirt to begin with, so the sleeves were waaay long. I cut it off just above the sleeve seam and it made for a nice capped sleeve.


I lengthened the dress with strips of other T-shirt fabric, as well as some leftovers I had tripping off the excess on the Hanna shirt.


FINISHED. I suck at explaining junk; plus I'm super tired and don't feel like revisiting it all that much.

I'll be getting some action shots of this dress as well, so stay tuned!

FINISHED! Mostly. I've got 2 coats on the back design that are going to dry while I'm at work tonight, and then I'll probably go over the whole coat and touch up some spots that seem thin. And then...Well I might just wear it to school tomorrow.

Had to go back to the craft store (OMG!) to get more paint today...ended up spending $27 dollars when I meant to spend $2. Yup. Art is bad for me.

Started painting the hoodie from Tessa's Let's Drop the Bomb pic.

It's pretty simple, I don't think there's much explanation needed for what's going on.

Just taped off the main edges, and used some shoelaces to give me an approximate space between stripes. Gotta let this dry and then get on to the back sides. Will try to finish it up tomorrow.

I've got plans to convert an XL version of the Hanna Is Not a Boy's Name shirt I was gifted by Tessa Stone at Dragon*Con this year into some kinda crazy t-shirt dress.














My sketch is horrible and I was too lazy to scan it....It's just an idea. I'm waiting for the Generation T: Beyond Fashion book to get transferred to my library before I really start sewing on this thing, because I want to see if it's got any good ideas.






















So yeah! First up on my sewing projects. Want to get it done ASAP, but we'll see! I'll try a step by step with this one, though I'm really bad at stopping what I'm doing to take photos.

No photos from this year's Dragon*Con yet, but I'm already starting to make plans for next year.

Yeah. You heard me.

~I intend to do Doc Worth once again, because he's just too damn fun!

~Also in store will be Veser Hatch! Because I think I'll be a more convincing 19 yr old.

~A TARDIS dress is also in order, as well has having to construct a femme!Doctor outfit for a friend.

~And I'll probably have one day for myself. Because it's always good to be yourself. If not myself, then a femme!Conrad will probably get done. Or Worth or Ves again.

There are also plans for an eventual steampunk Doc Worth, but that's not until the future.

A few other sewing projects that'll likely make it here as well:

~An Adelaide hoodie that I've been wanting for some time.

~And, of course, the evolution of the Conbat. Once I finally make a version I'm proud of, I'll do a whole post on his development.

~And plushies, should I start on those aggravating bastards again.

~A new edition to my list of junk to do, Hanna's hoodie from this image, because all it would take is a hoodie and some paint. Yay for easy!

As I said I'd do, here's a post with costumes I've put together thus far.

This was a pirate costume I made for last year's convention, though I'm not wearing it this year. Mum helped quite a lot with the sewing, though I intended to do it all myself.





















This is my Triana Orpheus costume that I put together for a project in my Visual Rhetoric class back in Dec '09. Only thing I sewed here was the skirt, and I hand stenciled the shirt. Wearing this in Atlanta in December was not one of my best ideas. Had a lot of fun trekking around Atl with a friend of mine who took the pics, though. This one is coming with me to D*con this year. Wee!

















My costume for Doc Worth, from the awesomely awesome webcomic Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name. Also being worn to D*Con this year. Again, only thing really sewn here was the coat, which was adapted from a Publix deli coat. This coat gave me a looot of trouble, and is, in fact, the second one I had to make after the first (which was a converted Kroger meat coat) suffered a horrible, hole-creating accident thanks to a particularly bad episode of LOST season 6. I hate having to take pictures of myself. I'll be sure to upload photos of me taken by other people after the con. XD
































Lastly, I whipped up a Finn costume (Finn, from the ever mathematical Adventure Time!). I'm not entirely sure how much of it I'm going to wear. I maaay just bring the awesome hat. We'll see, I guess.
